Post glass automotive glass — operations & scope
The term “post glass automotive glass” refers to all steps done after glass production and before delivery to the car maker; these steps add value, improve fit and finish, and speed up assembly.

What are Post Glass Operations?
Post Glass Operations cover tasks on newly produced glass performed before vehicle assembly. In the past, many of them were done inside the OEM plant. Today, they often move to the glass maker. As a result, scope and complexity grow. Therefore, IOCCO provides tailored cells and lines with step-by-step support.
Post glass automotive glass — scope and typical processes
The scope includes common and model-specific tasks. For example, we apply polyurethane beads along the edge to seal the glass to the body. This is frequent on windshields, side-fixed windows, backlites and roofs. In addition, we install seals, bond-on-lace and finishers to meet style and function goals. We also assemble centering pins and spacers so the glass sits correctly while the adhesive cures.
For context, see polyurethane, MES and ADAS.
On-glass devices and dedicated assembly systems
Modern vehicles use more on-glass devices. For example, windshields can host rain and light sensors or ADAS cameras. Meanwhile, side-fixed glass and backlites may carry antenna or heating connectors. Consequently, IOCCO designs dedicated machines for brackets, pins and connectors. These systems can be manual, semi-automatic or fully robotic, depending on volume and budget.
Encapsulation (PU · PVC · TPE)
Many side-fixed glass and backlites use a co-molded frame. This is the encapsulation process. The glass enters a thermoplastic press. Then PU, PVC or TPE is molded around the perimeter. Because the system is complex, it includes the press, material feeders and accessories. On request, we add glass preparation stations for cleaner and primer.
After encapsulation, we complete finishing tasks. For instance, we clean the gasket, apply optional long-life primer and perform packing. Backlites are larger; therefore, they need extra care to avoid breakage. For material background, see PVC and TPE.
Long-life primer: purpose and handling
Long-life primer speeds up body-shop work. It stays active for weeks after application. However, it is delicate. Therefore, teams must use felt or sponge tools and clear process checks.
Primer application: manual and robotic modes
Manual mode. A small conveyor with vacuum cups on a free-rotating frame is often enough. The station includes a foot pedal and a compact chemical bench with a poka-yoke system.
Automatic mode. IOCCO builds full robotic cells. Conveyors, centering units, pumps and feeders work with vision-guided robots. As a result, the process is continuous and repeatable.
Operations by glass type
- Mirror boss — windshield: dedicated cells place and bond the mirror base.
- Holder & skate — side lifting glass: the holder links to the lifter; the skate slides via a plastic pin through a small hole.
- Bright finisher — fixed sidelights: high-value parts handled manually or by robot.
- Grommet — backlite: watertight sealing for the rear-wiper hole; manual or automatic.
In summary, post glass automotive glass activities help OEMs and glass makers improve quality, reduce rework and shorten installation time. IOCCO delivers these results with safe, maintainable equipment and clear process control.
